Terrible accident, with many dead, on a highway in Germany
At least five people died and others were injured after a bus with 53 passengers overturned accident and overturned on the highway, near the city of Leipzig in eastern Germany, reports the local press, according to news.ro.
The accident happened on the A9 highway in Saxony, on Wednesday morning, when a coach of the Flixbus company, with 53 passengers and two drivers on board, went off the road and overturned under circumstances that are still unclear. The police issued a serious emergency alert.
The Flixbus had left Berlin at 8:00 local time and was heading to Zurich. The next stop was supposed to be Nuremberg, but the journey ended abruptly near Leipzig at around 9:45 am. The bus suddenly left the road between the Wiedemar exit and the Schkeuditzer Kreuz exit (in the direction of Munich). He left the highway, entered a group of trees and overturned. The passengers were pulled out of their seats due to the impact, and the bus was badly damaged.
The A9 motorway was completely closed
The A9 highway was completely closed, and the police and emergency services launched a large-scale operation, including five helicopters being sent to the scene, reports Bild.
Several passengers were injured, some of them seriously. The police were not able to give the exact number of victims for now. Also, no information is available regarding the identity of the victims.
The police set up a telephone line for information and questions from relatives.
Wednesday’s serious accident is not the first involving a coach Flixbus on this section of highway. In May 2019, a similar accident occurred just 15 kilometers further south, also on the A9. And then, the bus overturned, a woman died and over 70 people were injured, some of them seriously.
