Google recently announced an update to its inappropriate content policy, introducing a clause that explicitly prohibits the promotion of sites and services that generate deepfake pornography.

The new regulation will take effect on May 30 and joins the company’s already strict restrictions on sexually explicit ads.

According to the new policy, promoting “content synthetically modified or generated to be sexually explicit or contain nudity” is prohibited. Thus, any advertiser promoting sites or applications that generate deepfake pornography services will be suspended immediately, without prior warning, and will not be allowed to advertise on the Google platform, writes The Verge.

Google also extended this ban to ads in the Shopping section, where it banned the promotion of services that “generate, distribute, or store synthetic content that is sexually explicit or contains nudity.” This also includes tutorials for creating deepfake pornographic content.

Deepfake is a technology that uses artificial intelligence to create fake videos or audio in which faces or voices are altered.
