iPhone and Apple Watch users will now have access to a new feature from Apple that allows them to store and use their IDs, such as their driver’s license or ID card.
With the new functionality, IDs can be stored in Wallet, allowing users to access them directly from their watch or phone without having to physically carry them.
Apple brings a new feature for users
Users can integrate a valid driver’s license or other government-issued identification into the Wallet app. This functionality is available on iPhone 8 and later with iOS 16.5, or Apple Watch Series 4 and later equipped with WatchOS 9.5.
Scan the front and back of the document and follow the simple steps to confirm identity. Afterwards, the document is sent to the competent authority for approval.
However, the option on Apple is not valid in the European Union, but only in the United States.
Once added to Wallet, the ID can be used to verify age or identity in various locations by holding the phone close to a terminal, similar to the payment process at points of sale (POS).
This is true in places like bars, concerts, festivals, and in apps that ask for age verification.
The Company does not have access to information regarding when and where a user uses their ID
For example, in the United States, Wallet ID can be used at selected TSA (Transportation Security Administration) checkpoints at airports such as Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall (BWI), Denver International (DEN), Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International (ATL), Phoenix Sky Harbor International (PHX) and Ronald Reagan Washington National (DCA).
Users can now clearly see what information is being shared and authorize its sharing via Face ID or Touch ID. Apple ensures that neither the company nor the authorities will have access to information about the use of the digital ID, such as when or where it is used.
This means that Apple will not record or monitor users’ verification activities, regardless of whether they take place at an airport checkpoint or at the entrance to an event, according to zonait.ro.
