Apple recently introduced an innovative feature for iPhone and Apple Watch users in the United States, allowing the storage and use of identification documents, such as a driver’s license or pass, directly in the Wallet app. This option digitizes physical documents, providing a simplified and secure method of identity verification.

Available to users of iPhone 8 and later with iOS 16.5, as well as Apple Watch Series 4 or later wearers with WatchOS 9.5, the feature allows for the electronic addition of ID documents through a clearly defined process. Users just need to scan both sides of the document and follow the identity verification steps, after which the information is sent to the state for validation.

How Apple’s e-newsletter works

Once the ID is added to Wallet, it can be used to verify age or identity in various locations. The system works similarly to POS payments, only requiring the device to be close to a compatible terminal. This technology is proving useful in many contexts, from age verification in bars to use in applications that require identity verification.

In addition, digital ID is accepted at Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints in select US airports, making the screening process easier during air travel. Apple assures users that personal data is protected, authorization of access to information is done through Face ID or Touch ID, and the company does not track where or when the ID is used.
