Six months away after rolling out passkeys support on Android, WhatsApp is introducing the same option on iPhone as well.

Once enabled, it will allow users to biometrically authenticate into WhatsApp using either fingerprint scanning or facial recognition, depending on the iPhone model they own.

This option is a more convenient and secure alternative to confirming your identity via an SMS code.

Behind the convenience offered by biometric authentication are hidden two encryption keys, one on the phone and another on the WhatsApp servers, which are compared when the user biometrically confirms their identity.

Beyond the fact that logging in becomes simpler for the user, this variant is also more secure, unable to be intercepted by hackers without physical access to the phone.

Support for passkeys is now being rolled out by WhatsApp and will be rolling out to all over two billion users gradually over the coming weeks.
