Signal, the messaging app known for protecting user data, announces the introduction of new features that will increase user privacy, especially regarding phone number visibility.

Until now, users’ phone number was visible to all contacts in Signal. With the new update, the phone number will only be visible to contacts who have already saved it in their phonebook, writes Bleeping Computer.

Signal brings the ability to create a unique username

Furthermore, Signal brings the ability to create a unique username, an option for those who prefer not to divulge their phone number. This username will only be used within the app and will not be visible in conversations, thus providing an additional degree of anonymity.

Signal explains in an official statement that the new settings are flexible: “We’ve changed the default settings to hide the phone number from people who don’t have it in their contacts, but users can adjust this option to their preference. Creating a username is optional, and each user has control over how they can be found by their phone number. Regardless of the settings, communication with Signal contacts will remain unfettered.”

Another new element is the setting that allows users to decide who can find them on Signal using their phone number. This feature ensures that only people who know the exact username can initiate conversations.
