Google is introducing a new feature in Android 15 called “even dimmer” that promises to give users an improved visual experience in low-light conditions. This comes as an extension of the already existing “extra dim” feature, which allows the brightness of the display to be adjusted to a comfortable level for the eyes at night.

Android 15, with the new “even dimmer” option, aims to further reduce brightness, making it easier to use mobile devices in very low light conditions without negatively affecting the user experience. This is especially useful for those who feel that the minimum brightness level currently available on Android devices is not dim enough.

Android 15 has in the new function “even dimmer” applies a transformation matrix of red, green and blue pixel data, reducing the intensity of bright colors and, implicitly, the brightness of the screen. This is an evolution of the “extra dim” feature, which already reduces bright colors, but the “even dimmer” takes the process a step further, subtly integrating into Android 15’s accessibility settings.

Google will allow Android 15 users to enable or disable this feature from a Quick Settings tile or through an accessibility shortcut, making access quick and easy. While “extra dim” is intended to be switched as needed, it appears that “even dimmer” is designed to stay on more constantly, automatically adjusting to ambient lighting conditions.

Until now, “even dimmer” was not visible in Android 15 Beta 1, but it is expected to be available in the settings under “adaptive brightness”. This would allow the device to become “dimmer than usual”, thus optimizing use in very low light scenarios.

Android 15, by integrating the “even dimmer” function, shows us that Google continues its commitment to improve the accessibility and comfort of its users. This feature is a step forward in personalizing the Android experience, giving users greater flexibility and visual comfort at night.

It is important to note that although the interpretation of the “even dimmer” feature is based on analysis of the available code and preliminary information, the final functionality may differ. We’re eagerly awaiting more details and official confirmation from Google about exactly how even dimmer will be implemented in Android 15, promising a new era of brightness adaptability and customization on mobile devices.
