The new Android 15 version will introduce an innovative feature that will alert users when their devices are about to fail due to excessive wear of the NAND Flash storage chip.

Like the battery, NAND Flash memory in mobile devices wears out over time, but the effects of this wear and tear only become apparent when it’s too late, often leading to data loss and device failure.

In the context where the internal memory is integrated into the motherboard of the devices and cannot be easily replaced, monitoring its condition becomes crucial for extending the life of the devices. With the new update, Android 15 will be able to access UFS (Universal Flash Storage) specific wear indicators and display the wear level in a percentage format easy for users to understand, writes Phone Arena.

How the new feature on Android 15 works

This function is similar to that used to monitor battery health and will consider factors such as the total amount of data written and read against the maximum limit set by the chip manufacturer. By alerting users when memory is approaching specified limits, Android hopes to prevent situations where devices become unusable and help manage data and equipment replacement more efficiently.

This new feature, called Storage Health, is under development and is said to be available initially only on select devices running Android 15, most likely on Google’s Pixel models and other devices from well-known manufacturers. Lesser known devices may not include this feature due to manufacturer limitations.
