Remember 2-3 years ago when Apple put the navigation/search bar in Safari down on iOS, alienating some people? Well, now WhatsApp is also preparing a navigation bar, also in the bottom area. We have details and screenshots below.

I have to admit that I’m impressed by the sheer amount of updates WhatsApp has received over the past year, from photo editing tools, to AI, message transcription, new text formatting options. Plus pictures and video in higher resolution. Now we get a new design for the navigation area and access to basic functions.

Before we had “Chats”, “Status”, “Calls”, “Groups”. Now we will have “Chats”, “Updates”, “Communities” and “Calls” below. The look is cleaner and more airy, that’s what the company owned by Meta went for. The new design will take some getting used to, but it aligns with mobile ergonomics trends: one-handed use of a mobile device makes it convenient to navigate with your thumb using the element at the BOTTOM of the app, not the top.
