President Gustavo Petro announced the helicopter crash PHOTO X Network
Nine Colombian soldiers died in a helicopter accident while traveling in the department of Bolivar (north), where the army is fighting the largest cocaine cartel, the authorities announce, reports AFP.
“I mourn the death of nine members of the crew of the army helicopter that crashed while on its way to reinforce troops in the south (department) of Bolivar in operations against the Clan del Golfo,” Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced on X.
Neither the president nor the military establishment specified the circumstances of the accident or whether or not it is related to the criminal organization that claims 4,000 fighters, according to data from military intelligence.
An official source, who requested anonymity, announced that the helicopter – a Russian-made Mi-17 – “crashed by itself” while carrying supplies.
The crew members included a colonel and eight mid-ranking officers.
