Several police officers were shot in Charlotte, North Carolina, and a suspect was found dead in a home from which he fled while law enforcement was investigating, reports Reuters.
CBS News, citing unidentified law enforcement sources, says three agents were killed and a total of six were shot.
Police said only that “several” officers were shot, but have not yet confirmed if there are any deaths.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said the shootings began in northeast Charlotte as agents from a multi-agency federal sheriff’s task force were conducting an investigation.
“Several police officers were hit by gunfire and are being transported to the hospital,” the police department said on social networks.
Later, the police specified that a SWAT team checked the residence where the incident took place, and “the area is safe”.
According to CBS, law enforcement was trying to serve a warrant in east Charlotte when the shootout began.
An eyewitness told a local television station that he was working at home when he heard the agents asking someone from a neighboring house to come out. “After that, it was just chaos,” the witness said. “There were gunshots going off left and right. SWAT and US sheriffs set up snipers in our bedrooms. There was an officer who was led by the arms through our house. I don’t know if he was shot or if he was injured. It was a real madness. The shots lasted for almost 30 minutes,” said the witness.
A video posted on social media appeared to show more than a dozen police cars and two officers racing to the scene.
