Tennis player Irina Begu qualified for the third round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Rome on Friday, after a double withdrawal.

First, the player from Kazakhstan Elena Rîbakina, number 4 WTA, withdrew from the competition in Italy, where she was going to face Irina Begu in the second round.

“I am disappointed that I have to withdraw from Rome this year, but unfortunately I do not feel well enough to compete,” Ribakina said in a statement. “I have such good memories of last year and I couldn’t wait to defend my title. Rome is so special to me and I can’t wait to come back next year to claim my title and play in front of the Italian fans,” Rîbakina added .

It is the second time this season that Rîbakina withdraws from an event as the title champion. In March, she withdrew from Indian Wells, also citing a gastrointestinal illness.

In Rome, Rîbakina was replaced by lucky loser Oceane Dodin (73 WTA), who faced Irina Begu, 161 WTA, in the second round.

Irina Begu qualified for the third round benefiting from the abandonment of her opponent, at the score of 5-2 in the first set for the Romanian.

In the next match, Irina Begu will compete with the Belgian Elise Mertens.
