The Championship, the second league in England, scheduled the last stage of the season on Saturday afternoon.

Leicester mathematically achieved direct promotion as early as a week ago, also securing first place in the Championship. In the last round, the “foxes” lost against Blackburn Rovers, 0-2.

The second directly promoted team is Ipswich Town, who only needed a draw to avoid depending on the result between Leeds and Southampton and return to the top flight after 22 years in exile.

The “tractors”, however, ended the season with a victory, 2-0 against Huddersfield and started the fiesta in the city.

In another match, rival Leeds United lost at home to Southampton, 1-2.

Ipswich are the first team to be promoted from League One to the Championship and the following year directly to the Premier League since 2012, with Southampton the last team to achieve this feat.

A team without a pedigree

Ipswich Town have played in the Premier League in just five campaigns.

The club was part of the inaugural Premier League season in 1992/1993 under John Lyall. After a difficult year in which they fought to avoid relegation, they survived and finished in 16th place.

In the following season, they had a similar story, fighting to stay in the first league again. Once again, they succeeded, finishing one point above the bottom two teams (at that time, only two teams were relegated).

A year later, Ipswich finished bottom of the table and were relegated to the second tier.

Their most memorable season was 2000/2001 under manager George Burley, when they achieved a remarkable fifth-place finish, qualifying for the UEFA Cup.

This success was quickly overshadowed as they were relegated back to the Championship the following season after finishing 18th.

Four teams for a place in PL

In the last round, the final configuration of the play-off was established. There will be two round-robin semi-finals and the winners will play in what is considered one of football’s most lucrative matches on May 26, when the final at Wembley is scheduled.

Scheduled between May 12-17, the two semi-finals will oppose the 3rd and 6th place holders, Leeds and Norwichand those on places 4-5, Southampton and West Bromwich Albion.

Birmingham, Huddersfield and Rotherham are the three teams that have been relegated from the Championship.
