Cristi Chivu could leave Italy, where he coaches Inter Milan’s U19 team, to join the technical bench of another former team, Ajax Amsterdam.

The former Romanian international’s contract expires this summer and even if the Italians would like to continue with him, Chivu has made it clear for a long time that he wants another challenge.

Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio announced that the opportunity could arise from the Netherlands, with Ajax extremely interested in the services of Chivu, who they would like to bring in as the future manager’s assistant, with Englishman Graham Potter being the favorite to take over the bench “The woollies”.

Di Marzio writes that Ajax would be willing to put a five-year contract on the table for their former player, with the plan being that after a period spent as an assistant, he will step up to the main position.

Representatives of the Dutch club were already in Italy to watch the Primavera match between Inter and Cagliari (ended 3-0 for Chivu’s boys) on April 20.

“After a very complicated season, which did not live up to expectations, Ajax is already planning its near future.

“Among the names that the club takes after John van’t Schip, the current coach of the Dutch club, is that of Cristian Chivu, now at the helm of Inter U19.

The “lancers” see in their former defender a coach for the future. The aim would be for him to work immediately alongside a more experienced coach such as Graham Potter, who is currently the leading candidate.

“Ajax would like to offer Chivu a 5-year contract to prepare and develop him until he becomes a manager in two or three years”tuttomercatoweb also reported.

The information was also picked up by the Dutch media, and journalists from voetbalzone.nl wrote: “Chivu would be flattered by the interest of the Amsterdam team and is seriously considering returning to Ajax”.

“An incredible boy”

Cristian Chivu played for 4 years at Ajax, between 1999 and 2003, a period in which the “Lancers” were constantly in the fight for trophies, unlike this year in which they finished in 5th place after a disappointing season, in which he was at one point in last place in the Eredivisie.

Chivu’s work at Inter U19 did not go unnoticed, the Romanian being on the cards even for the bench of the first team at a time when the game under Simone Inzaghi had started to creak, but the nerrazuzzi recovered and the idea of replacing the coach was abandoned.

“Chivu is an incredible boy. He was lucky enough to go to Ajax, and that certainly helped him. There he was helped to grow both as a person and as a football player. Now he told me that he has become something more rigid with his players and demands more from them.

“I like him, he is an incredible boy and I wish him to achieve what Thiago Motta achieved with Bologna. Chivu was already a coach on the pitch, he’s good, he has a vision and he’s smart, just like me”said about Chivu his former colleague, Marco Materazzi, quoted by L’Interista.
