The ‘Wizard of Wishaw’ has spectacularly qualified for the quarter-finals of the 2024 World Snooker Championship after needing a decisive game against world number three Mark Allen (score 13-12). John Higgins (48) is among the top eight players at the Crucible for the 18th time in his career.

John Higgins, Crucible quarters – 13-12 win over Mark Allen

Higgins vs Allen was by far, according to the experts, the most attractive match of the round of 16 in Sheffield.

The match lived up to its spectacular poster and resulted in a duel that needed decisive play to determine the winner. The match had everything: score reversals, spectacular executions, unexpected misses and an audience that thoroughly enjoyed the recital given by the two great players.

Leading at one point 10-7, Higgins never let up, the fantastic experience keeping him hanging on to every ball, every execution.

He hoped, he suffered, and in the end he rejoiced like a child.

John took advantage in the deciding game of a surprising miss by Allen, and then closed the table like a grand champion.

“I don’t know how to explain what happened in the last game. I saw that I couldn’t play the ball that Mark missed and I said to myself: This is your chance! If you manage to hit the red ball with the cloak, it’s your game.

I was convinced that I could close the table. I managed the shot and I managed to keep my composure after that, although there were very tense moments” – John Higgins for Eurosport.

“I need to improve a few things in my game, but I had John in front of me, one of the greatest players of all time.

I came here to win the tournament, so anything other than that would have been a disappointment. I didn’t take my chances today and I got what I deserved.

I wish John the best of luck for the rest of the tournament, I hope he can continue in the same vein. I told him at the end, I wish with all my heart that he believes in him” – Mark Allen for Eurosport.

Following this success, John has “collected” the score of head-to-head matches: it is 15-14 for Allen at the moment.

With four Crucible titles in his career (1998, 2007, 2009 and 2011), the ‘Wizard of Wishaw’ is back in the World Snooker quarter-finals, and anything can happen from here on out.

For a place in the semi-finals, John Higgins will have to fight with Kyren Wilson (12).
