The press in the United States writes that the searches are related to an investigation into the mishandling of some classified documents that were allegedly brought by Donald Trump to his residence.
Donald Trump stated, in a statement, that the FBI searched his home in Palm Beach, Florida. He complained that he was subject to political persecution, that FBI agents broke into his safe, and that searches were unnecessary given his cooperation with government agencies.
According to the Washington Post, after leaving the White House, Donald Trump took with him several boxes of documents from his time as president, including documents initialed top secret.
The law requires that all letters, e-mails and other business documents remain with the FBI.
White House staff regularly discovered piles of paper clogging toilets and suspected the president of wanting to get rid of certain documents, according to information in a book to be published by the New York Times.
He is currently being investigated by a congressional committee that is trying to find out the role played by Donald Trump in the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
