Sadiq Khan – aged 53, the son of Pakistani immigrants and the first Muslim mayor of London – obtained 1,088,000 votes, compared to 813,000 for the conservative candidate Susana Hall.
Sadiq Khan has led the British capital since 2016, succeeding Boris Johnson, who served two consecutive terms as mayor before becoming prime minister.
Further Labor victories were expected after Thursday’s local elections, a signal ahead of this year’s national election, which polls say could bring Labor leader Keir Starmer to power and end 14 years of Conservative government.
Voters voted on Thursday for more than 2,000 local council mandates in England and for several important mayoral seats, including in the capital London.
