The Atlantic Council, one of the world’s leading think tanks, announced Wednesday, May 1, the recipients of its 2024 Leadership Awards, which will be presented during a gala in Washington, DC on May 8. Klaus Iohannis is included among the four laureates, who will end his second and last term as president of Romania in a few months.

Klaus Iohannis (64 years old) is the first mentioned in the list published by the Atlantic Council, which specifies that it chose to reward the Romanian president for “his outstanding career, exemplary leadership of Romania and for his role in transatlantic and European leadership”. The award will be announced and presented by Stephen J. Hadley, Chair of the Atlantic Council’s International Advisory Committee and former US National Security Advisor.

The other three honorees announced are US Commerce Secretary Gina M. Raimondo, Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) and US European Command Chief General Christopher G. Cavoli, and Michelle Yeoh, winner of the 2023 Academy Award for best actress in a leading role.

Gina M. Raimondo is being honored for her outstanding tenure in the US administration and for being the first woman elected governor of the state of Rhode Island. General Christopher G. Cavoli is honored for his more than 35-year career in the US military, while actress Michelle Yeoh is honored for her talent and for becoming the first Asian to win the Academy Award for Best Actress.

“The recipients of the 2024 Distinguished Leadership Awards are outstanding and extremely diverse representatives of global leaders who, through their lifelong commitment and contributions, have contributed to a better world. By honoring them, we hope to inspire others to step forward at a time when the world so urgently needs distinguished leaders,” said Frederick Kempe, president and CEO of the Atlantic Council.

Past laureates include former US presidents George W. Bush, William J. Clinton, George HW Bush, current White House leader Joe Biden, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, former managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Christine Lagarde and the current head of the IMF, Kristalina Gheorghieva, the Director General of the World Trade Organization, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, as well as illustrious artists including Dua Lipa, Lionel Richie, Bono, Gloria Estefan and Renee Fleming.
