It is a robot with impressive abilities. Able to use articulated fingers like a human, fold laundry and dance, Optimus, Elon Musk’s humanoid robot, could go on sale as early as the end of 2025, according to BFM TV.
Several companies have bet on humanoid robots to deal with a potential labor shortage and to perform repetitive tasks that could be dangerous or boring in industries such as logistics, warehousing, retail and manufacturing, Reuters also notes. according to which Elon Musk told investors in a conference call that he expects the robot to already be able to perform the necessary tasks in the manufacturer’s factories by the end of this year
Designed by Tesla engineers, this Stormtrooper-like robot (Imperial soldiers from the Star Wars saga) is a biped equipped with a multitude of sensors that give it a tactile sensation. Endowed with extraordinary grasping ability, it is even able to handle eggs without breaking them.
Despite all its capabilities, Optimus faces some stiff competition. Japan’s Honda and America’s Boston Dynamics are emerging as serious contenders in the race to robotize businesses and homes.
“I think Tesla is in the best position of all humanoid robot manufacturers to be able to do volume production” of this robot, the billionaire said, citing the possibility of integrating generative artificial intelligence into Optimus.
Elon Musk stressed, however, that his intention to sell the humanoid robot to third parties by the end of next year is “just a guess.”
It should be noted that Musk has a history of breaking bold promises. In 2019, he told investors that Tesla would operate a network of autonomous “robotaxis” cars by 2020.
