Recently announced, QDEL screen technology promises to revolutionize the TV industry, starting with the premium segment and gradually expanding to the budget range.

While OLED TVs have become more affordable, high costs and certain technical limitations, such as low brightness in cheaper models and susceptibility to burn-in, continue to restrict widespread adoption.

In this context, Micro LED technology was perceived as a solution, but challenges related to production costs prevented its widespread implementation. So the industry has innovated by developing QD-OLED screens, which integrate Quantum Dot technology to enhance brightness and color vibrancy. These screens use a Quantum Dot filter over the OLED matrix, optimizing energy consumption and durability through efficient use of organic compounds.

QDEL technology eliminates the need for a separate OLED array

Moving forward, QDEL technology eliminates the need for a separate OLED matrix and embeds Quantum Dot technology directly at the level of each pixel, turning each pixel into its own light source. This development promises brighter and more energy efficient screens.

Originally called NanoLED by the company Nanosys, QDEL technology has been rebranded under various names, including QLED, a term later picked up by Samsung for its LCD-LED TVs that use Quantum Dot. Other names it might come across include QD-EL, QD-LED, and EL-QD.

Omdia’s David Hsieh points out that QDEL has the potential to transform not only the TV market, but also the PC monitor and automotive industry, offering a superior cost-performance ratio to traditional OLED displays.
