Finland has successfully tested its ability to manage a war economy and has begun storing military equipment outside its national borders, as the Nordic country renowned for its high level of preparedness confronts an increasingly aggressive Russia.
Lieutenant General Mikko Heiskanen, the deputy chief of staff for armaments and logistics in the Finnish defense forces, told the Financial Times that Finland had recently audited more than 1,000 agreements it has with private companies to produce equipment or supply wartime services.
“We must be prepared for a long-term crisis… . I activated some of these, checked all agreements, tested purchases not only for ammunition, but also for other materials. We are testing the plans and preparation of our strategic partners,” said Heiskanen, whose Finnish job title translates as head of the war economy.
Finland, which has the longest border with Russia of any NATO or EU country, is well known for having focused on a possible attack from its eastern neighbor for decades, resulting in a level of preparedness that can unparalleled in the western world. Finland has fought numerous conflicts with Russia, the most famous being the Winter War of 1939-40, in which the Nordic country inflicted hundreds of thousands of casualties on the invading Soviet army.
