The new Phishing-as-a-Service (PhaaS), called “Darcula”, stands out for its unique approach, targeting victims through the Rich Communication Services (RCS) protocol for Google Messages and iMessage, instead of the traditional messaging system short messages (SMS). This technique not only increases the appearance of message legitimacy, but also takes advantage of the end-to-end encryption of RCS messages, making them nearly impossible to intercept or block based on their content.

PhaaS “Darcula” allows hackers to impersonate dozens of well-known organizations, offering over 200 phishing templates to choose from. By paying a subscription, attackers can select companies from various sectors such as postal, financial, government, telecommunications, airline and utilities, gaining access to a customized phishing website, complete with appropriate fonts, images and authentic logos.

These phishing sites are described by researchers as “high quality”, and the “Darcula” platform has been involved in numerous high-profile attacks over the past year. The attacks were not limited to mobile devices, affecting users in more than 100 countries, including notable incidents involving the impersonation of the United States Postal Service (USPS), highlighting the global reach and significant impact of this type of attack.

With approximately 20,000 associated domains and over 100 new domains added daily, “Darcula” represents a growing threat to online security. Security experts stress the importance of user vigilance: unexpected messages that sound unusual or too good to be true should be treated with extra caution.

To protect against these sophisticated attacks, users are advised to use up-to-date security applications, verify the source of incoming messages, and avoid clicking on links or downloading files from unconfirmed sources.
