The Minister of Justice, Alina Gorghiu, made a blunder on a radio show on Wednesday, ironically precisely in an attempt to explain to Romanians the correct form of the noun “minister” according to the Orthographic, Orthoepic and Morphological Dictionary (DOOM), writes G4Media.ro.

Avoiding the simple term “Dictionary”, or the acronym DOOM, Gorghiu wanted to clarify that the noun minister “now exists in the ORTHOPEDIC and orthographic Dictionary of the Romanian Language in the feminine version”.

She replaced the correct term “orthopeic” with the erroneous term “orthopedic”.

Without correcting her error, she went on to express her “joy” that at least “from this perspective equality of opportunity works, because otherwise, we are in last place in gender equality rankings”.

According to the Explanatory Dictionary of the Romanian Language (DEX), orthoepic means “belonging to orthoepy, pertaining to orthoepy”, orthoepic being a “set of rules specific to a language that concern the correct (literary) pronunciation of words; discipline that deals with the study of these rules. – From Fr. orthoepy”.
