Konstantinos Passaris, nicknamed the “Beast from the Balkans”, was found guilty in July 2003, in Romania, of murdering a cashier from a currency exchange office in Bucharest and a bodyguard. He was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Passaris had been wanted by Interpol since June 2001 for murder and involvement in other violent crimes committed in Greece. He also killed 2 police officers during a prison break.

Because of this, law enforcement officials decided Passaris was a dangerous inmate and held him in several maximum security prisons.

Now, he has been moved from the prison in Arad to the maximum security penitentiary in Craiova. Increased security measures were taken there in view of previous escape attempts.

Sources from the Penitentiary Administration say that Passaris is constantly looking for security breaches, but Craiova prison officials say they have prepared to keep Passaris under observation.

He is monitored 24 hours a day and is taken out of the cell under very strict conditions.

Cosmin Dorobanțu, the president of the Federation of Trade Unions from the National Administration of Penitentiaries, told Digi24 that Passaris was previously imprisoned in Craiova, from where he went to Gherla, because he was a stress factor for the guards.

“He needs to be moved from prison to prison because he influences the clan leaders in the prisons, in the sense that he can manipulate them to his advantage. May attack colleagues. Increased security measures will be provided in Craiova as well. They are complementary measures to reduce the risk of an escape, riot, critical incidents. He greatly influences the inmates he comes into contact with,” he explained.

“There were myths that he had learned all the architecture of the prison, which he wanted to use to escape. That’s why he was escorted to Gherla, like in the movies,” he added.

“He has an inordinate amount of influence on other people. Even the inmates ended up taking the side of this dangerous criminal. We do not know the ways in which it influences them. He has an excessively high persuasive power and that is why he is moved, so as not to cause riots. He transforms himself into a leader of the prisoners”, Dorobanțu also said.
