We’ve put together a handy guide with everything you need to know about this fruity drink so you know where to buy it and how to drink it. Luck!

Palinka is a type of fruit brandy made exclusively in Hungary and Romania

First appearing in the 1600s, this classic drink is made through a process of fermentation and distillation. The term “Romanian pálinka” is not actually correct, because the European Union actually created a “pálinka law” that allows pálinka to be made and produced only in Hungary (along with 4 Austrian regions). In contrast, Romanian pálinka is better known as “tuica”, a type of plum brandy.

Enjoy palinca at room temperature for best flavor

Chilled pálinca does not carry the delicious smells and aromas that room temperature palinca has. Feel free to refrigerate or freeze the glasses for a little while before serving the pálinkc, though!.

What is the price of brandy?

In stores, if you take it as a souvenir, it can reach 100 lei per liter. Also, large companies produce bottled fennel at the same price. A liter of brandy or palinca bought in the village, by the farmers, made from fresh fruit is sold for 30-35 lei per liter. Brandy with added sugar also costs 10-15 lei. Not recommended.

Sip the palinca slowly so you don’t get drunk

Some people suggest drinking the brandy in one gulp, like a traditional shot, but that’s not the best way to enjoy the drink. Plus, you get drunk for sure. Palinca is full of delicious, fruity flavors that deserve to be enjoyed in small, slow sips.

Be sure to have something to eat: bacon, homemade bread, cheese work best and also help keep you from getting drunk.

Palinka comes in a variety of flavors including apricot, plum, pear, cherry and apple.

Palinka is used as a digestif, that is, a drink that is served after a large meal. It can help you digest your food after a heavy and fatty dinner. After you’re done eating, pour yourself a small glass as a way to relax and unwind.

Páainca can also be used as an aperitif, or as a drink served before a large meal

Brandy is usually at least 35% alcohol.

It is considered a spirit and has a significantly higher alcohol content than a typical beer or wine drink. Some varieties of the drink have an alcohol percentage of 40%, while others have more than 50% alcohol.
Always double check the bottle before pouring yourself a glass of brandy, or ask a waiter or bartender what the alcohol percentage is before tasting it.

According to EU legislation, palinca cannot have an alcohol content higher than 80%.
