In the second half of March of the current year, the Association of Independent Midwives (AMI) organized a series of courses in Târgu Mureș within the “Mother Care” Network, in which a number of issues regarding the current situation were discussed of midwives in the medical system in Romania.

According to information provided by Melania Tudose, the president of AMI, discussions were initiated regarding a potential partnership of AMI with the University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Sciences and Technology “George Emil Palade” from Târgu Mureș, regarding the re-implementation of the Midwifery specialty. “The University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Târgu Mureș had such a program in the recent past and we hope that, following some discussions we want to have with the management of this university, we will sign a partnership and develop a plan for this purpose. It is important to remember that the establishment of academic training programs for midwives was a condition for Romania’s integration into the European Union. Thus, as a result of this condition, 9 medical universities have opened such programs. Unfortunately, the health system did not align with European requirements and did not systematically deal with the integration of midwives, which is why the number of candidates was not sustainable in the terms and conditions of the respective universities. We make efforts to support the reopening or opening of other programs as well, but also to support people who want to become midwives and offer them free admission support: individual or group training with Biology teachers, access to approved study materials, simulations for the entrance exam, mentoring sessions with experienced midwives,” explained Melania Tudose.

For this ideal to materialize, Melania Tudose emphasized the irrefutable importance of the political decision-making factor. “We want the health authorities to understand that the midwife is an essential pawn in the provision of medical services for reproductive health. Moreover, the European countries with ideal indices in this field demonstrate this fact. We need to see more concrete actions from the authorities to support and develop the midwifery profession because they need to bring the midwife back to women. Women in Romania deserve reproductive health just like women in Europe,” she added.

The role of the midwife in the medical system

It is commonly believed that the midwife’s role ends once the baby is born. However, the real attributes of a relic are much more varied and permissible, its presence being important in all stages of life. About the role of the midwife in the medical system, Melania Tudose stated the following: “The range of services that the midwife can offer is very varied and extensive, starting from counseling and educating young people on sexual and reproductive health, giving advice on contraception and family planning, supervision of healthy pregnant women, support of antenatal and postnatal education courses, preparation for birth and for the role of parents, supervision of labor and birth assistance, provision of first care to the healthy newborn, supervision and support of the woman after childbirth, care and monitoring the healthy child at least in the first month of life and up to the counseling of menopausal women”, said the AMI president.

The midwife’s academic training gives her a Pantagruelian importance. It has the competence to identify in time the abnormalities of the mother or the newborn that may be suspicions of any potential pathology. From this point of view, the midwife is an irreducible pawn in preventive and primary medicine.
