The new power line between Romania and the Republic of Moldova will be built with American support. The memorandum has already been signed, the start of the works is scheduled for 2025. The project is financially supported by USAI (US Agency for International Development), and the connection will be made between the Strășeni (Moldova) and Gutinaș (Romania) stations. The air line will have a length of 190 kilometers.
A Memorandum of Understanding for the construction of the Moldovan portion of the high-voltage line was signed on Tuesday, in Strășeni, by the Minister of Energy, Victor Parlicov, and the deputy administrator of USAID, Isobel Coleman, according to the press in Rep. Moldova.
“We are witnessing a historic event”, said the Minister of Energy from Chisinau, who also stated that, at the end of 2028, the Republic of Moldova will be able to integrate into the European energy market, through the Romanian market.
“Without this collaboration, without this openness, without this unconditional political support that Bucharest has always had towards the Republic of Moldova, and especially with the European path of the Republic of Moldova, we would not have been able to reach the speed of achievement that we have today of infrastructure projects, to ensure security and to get some more favorable prices for our consumers. I thank Romania, I thank the American people for their support, because in the end it’s the tax payers’ money and we have to understand that,” declared Victor Parlicov.

The deputy administrator of USAID, Isobel Coleman, emphasized the benefits that this project will bring, targeting the two banks of the Prut.
“This will increase Moldova’s independence and at the same time ensure affordable energy. On a symbolic level, it is another example of how Moldova integrates with Europe. The memorandum we are signing today reflects our trust in the people and in the Government of Moldova”, said Isobel Coleman, quoted by the media from across the Prut.
The US Ambassador in Chisinau also spoke:
“The United States strongly supports Moldova’s efforts to integrate into the European Union. The Străseni-Gutinaș high voltage line will provide Moldovan citizens with sufficient energy to cover peak demand periods, increasing energy security and reliability. Also, this line will help the Republic of Moldova to procure energy at affordable prices and in the future to sell on the European market”, said Kent Logsdon, the US ambassador in Chisinau.
The official said that the US plans to invest $220 million in the construction of this line and in projects that increase stability and stimulate private investment in domestic energy generation.
The construction of the first line has already started. It is about the 400 kV Vulcăneşti-Chişinău overhead power line, which will be over 150 kilometers long. The second is the 400 kV Suceava-Bălți line, 142 km long, of which 93 km on Romanian territory, which has European funding for the Romanian sector and for which Transelectrica put the execution contract out to auction last month.
