The “Paul Păltănea” History Museum invites the people of Galați, in May, to the “Hammonia Typewriter” mini-exhibition. The object, with a special museum value, has been part of the institution’s heritage since 1949, when Anton Panaitescu, the director of the “VA Urechia” Library, donated it to the “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” Museum. The minutes were approved by the Ministry of Public Education, to enrich the museum’s collections.

The “Hammonia” typewriter was invented by Andreas Hansen in 1882, according to the Imperial Patent Office in Hamburg (patent number 27095, dated August 18, 1882). Two years later, the Guhl & Harbeck company from Hamburg started to manufacture the typewriter in its own factory, where until then it produced sewing machines. Initially, the typewriter cost 45 marks, then the price was raised to 60 marks. “Hammonia”, which bears the Latin name of the city of Hamburg, was the first typewriter produced in Germany.

The cultural asset that can be found in the “Science and Technology” Collection, curated by museographer Dr. Valentin Bodea, will be able to be admired for one month, at the Lapidarium Section of the History Museum.
