At the Oradea airport, the reception of the works to modernize the passenger terminal has begun, an operation which, due to their scale, will last two weeks, and at the end of which it will be available for anyone to visit.

The new terminal is not only bigger and more comfortable for passengers, but also equipped with technologies that will make it easier for them to start or end their journeys.

Open days

“On Friday, April 26, the reception of works at the passenger terminal no. 1 of Oradea Airport”, the airport management announced on Tuesday, through a press release stating that “given the scale and involvement of multiple institutions in this complex project, the reception process will take place over the course of two weeks, being planned to be completed on May 10, 2024”.

According to the airport management, on the weekend of May 11-12, it “will be the host of Open Days”, the full program of the event to be announced after the Easter Holidays.

The official inauguration of the new terminal is scheduled for May 18, with a charter flight to Hurghada, operated by HiSky airline.

Bigger, simpler, more “updated”

As part of the passenger terminal modernization project, its area was expanded to 12,500 square meters (from less than 3,000 sq m), to meet, according to the airport’s management, “the needs of the ever-increasing passenger demand”.

The service capacity has been doubled to 800 passengers per hour to provide faster and more efficient services.

Departure areas for Schengen and non-Schengen destinations have been separated, which will help to optimize the flow of travelers and simplify passport control procedures.

To facilitate passenger and baggage processing, digitized systems have been introduced. These include check-in counters with bag self drop-off service. Automated pre-security gates have also been installed that can be accessed by simply scanning the boarding pass, especially for travel to non-Schengen destinations.

Easier to maintain

On the other hand, the terminal modernization project also included the implementation of an intelligent building management system, through which electricity consumption will be monitored, for the management and maintenance of equipment, for the control of heat pumps, air treatment plants and of the underfloor heating system.

“The expansion of the passenger terminal is a sustainable investment, as it aims at a near-zero energy building (nZEB),” the airport management points out. To improve the energy performance of the terminal, a photovoltaic park with an installed power of 1.3 MW was installed. Of this capacity, 0.8 MW comes from photovoltaic panels mounted on the roof of the building, and 0.5 MW from panels installed near the new extension of the terminal.

In addition, in order to optimize the energy efficiency of the building, a heating and cooling system based on geothermal water has been adopted.

With EU funds

The expansion and efficiency of the passenger terminal was financed through the Large Infrastructure Operational Program (POIM) 2014-2020, this European financial year, which ended in December of last year, being the last one in which non-refundable funds were allocated for the modernization of airports .

The total value of the financing contract was 234,730 million lei, of which the eligible value is 184,904 million lei, an amount of which 181,206 million lei (98% of the total eligible value) represents non-refundable financing.

Representatives of Oradea Airport, CJ Bihor, Oradea City Hall, ISU, Bihor County Construction Inspectorate and the construction companies that executed them (SSAB AG SA, Bemel AG and ACA Zoork) participate in the reception of the works.

The races are on

Currently, only regular Tarom flights on the Bucharest connection and charter flights are operated at the Oradea airport.

From June, the public airline company in Poland, LOT – Polish Airlines, will operate four weekly flights Oradea – Warsaw, the largest hub in Eastern Europe, from where, with a single ticket, they will then be able to fly to destinations in Europe, America North, Asia and the Middle East.

For this purpose, CJ Bihor and LOT concluded a contract valid until May 31, 2028, the Oradea – Warsaw flights being established as a mandatory public service and subsidized with an amount that will depend on the degree of aircraft loading.

On the other hand, based on another contract, signed by Air Oradea by the City Hall and CJ Bihor for five years, from autumn the HiSky company will also operate from the Oradea airport, initially with 5 flights per week between Oradea and Bucharest, 3 weekly flights Oradea – London and charter flights to three holiday destinations.

According to some sources in the field, the Animawings company could soon announce its intention to operate Oradea – Bucharest flights.
