Swine plague decimated the farms of breeders in Olt. More than 11,000 animals were slaughtered, after the suspicions were confirmed at a pig farm in Negreni. Moreover, the towns of Olt have come under the scrutiny of the veterinary authorities and the access of live animals to the fairs, as well as the sale of meat, is prohibited. Romania slaughters more than 3 million pigs annually, but official figures show that in recent years the consumption of pork has decreased significantly.

Almost 11,500 pigs from a farm in the village of Negreni, in the city of Scornicesti, will be eliminated after an outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) was confirmed in that commercial holding, informed the representatives of the Veterinary Sanitary and Food Safety Directorate (DSVSA ) Olt. The analyzes carried out by the Animal Health and Diagnostic Institute in Bucharest confirmed the outbreak of African swine fever at the farm in Negreni on April 25, also at that time the Local Center for Combating Olt Diseases was also convened, which approved the plan of measures that provides for the elimination of all pigs, destruction of animal carcasses and farm materials.

“The Veterinary Sanitary and Food Safety Directorate (DSVSA) Olt informs that an outbreak of African swine fever has been confirmed in pigs from a commercial holding in Negreni, Scornicesti town, Olt county, based on the analysis bulletin issued on 25.04 .2024 by the Institute of Animal Health and Diagnostics. On 25.04.2024, the Local Center for Combating Olt Diseases (CLCB) met at the Prefect’s Institution and approved the Plan of measures to combat African swine fever in commercial pig farming. from the town of Negreni, town of Scornicesti, Olt county, where the measure of elimination of all pigs, namely a herd of 11,425 pigs, is applied, in accordance with the provisions of the veterinary sanitary legislation in force official supervision, in accordance with the legal provisions”, said the cited source.

Swine plague destroys farms in Olt

The authorities have also established surveillance protection zones for African swine fever. Thus, the protection zone including the villages of Negreni, Chițasca, Piscani, Mărgineni – Slobozia in the town of Scorniceşti and the hunting grounds in the towns of Scorniceşti and Potcoava.

Also, the African swine fever surveillance area included the localities of Scornicesti, Potcoava, Optaşi – Măgura, Coloneşti and Tătulesti. Two commercial holdings from Constantineşti (Scorniceşti) are also included in the surveillance area.

DSVSA states that the sale of live pigs as well as pork and pork products from pigs in these localities is prohibited. The spokesperson of DSVSA Olt, Venera Popa, stated on Monday, for AGERPRES, that the elimination of pigs from the farm where the ASF outbreak was confirmed began on Friday and will be completed on Monday, and currently there are no more suspicions of illness in the animals from other holdings or commercial or households.

The Negreni farm where the ASF outbreak was confirmed faced another disease outbreak almost three years ago, in September 2021.
