On Thursday, April 25, 2024, in the Amphitheater of Bihor County Emergency Clinical Hospital, the event took place Patient Blood Management (PBM) – A win-win concept. It consisted of a series of presentations on the benefits and practical aspects of the concept of patient blood management, patient management practices, the role of staff involved.

Extraordinary Europe Day show in Piata Unirii in Oradea

The event started with a word from Prof. Univ. Dr. Lucia Daina, medical director of the Bihor County Emergency Clinical Hospital. Mrs. Director conveyed that the event was organized out of a desire to better manage blood, both from a clinical and efficiency point of view. Thus, by means of the anesthetic consultation and the day hospitalization, the pre-operative evaluation of the patient and the optimization of the clinical parameters before the surgical interventions are desired.

The first presentation introduced the concept of managing the patient’s blood, and Mr. Associate Dr. Ovidiu Bedreag from Timișoara County Emergency Clinical Hospital brought to the fore anemia and transfusions as a risk factor in surgical interventions and the role of iron in the treatment of iron deficiency anemia and of pre- and postoperative iron deficiency.

Prof. Dr. Daniela Ionescu, from the Regional Institute of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Prof. Dr. Octavian Fodor (IRGH) from Cluj-Napoca presented the benefits of implementing the concept of patient blood management, a concept associated with improved postoperative results and increased patient safety .

Prof. Dr. Cosmin Puia, from IRGH Cluj-Napoca addressed the surgeon’s role in managing the patient’s blood, emphasizing the fact that the number of surgical interventions worldwide is constantly increasing, so surgeons have an increasingly active role on the part of management of patients’ blood. Additionally, Mr. Prof. Puia drew attention to the importance of preoperative anemia screening and preoperative anemia correction by targeting iron deficiency in patients.

The last presentation focused on practical aspects of implementing the concept of patient blood management. Assist. Univ. Dr. Robert Szabo, from the Emergency County Clinical Hospital in Cluj-Napoca emphasized the role of the family doctor, the surgeon and the anesthetist in the context of the patient circuit from the outpatient clinic to the operating room.

The event was organized by the Bihor Emergency County Clinical Hospital in partnership with the Association for ATI Aurel Mogoșeanu and with the support of CSL Vifor.
