The Chair of Physics Professor of President Klaus Iohannis at the “Samuel von Brukenthal” National College in Sibiu has become vacant and can be filled by an incumbent. After a period of more than 20 years in which the position was reserved, it became vacant because the Romanian president applied for retirement, writes Ora de Sibiu.

  • The Presidential Administration confirmed the information. “Mr. President has initiated the steps required by the legislation in force to submit the retirement file for the age limit”, stated the Presidential Administration, according to Agerpres.

The list of positions available for tenure in Sibiu county was published on Monday, April 29, 2024. Among them is one of the positions of a teacher for the discipline of Physics at the Brukenthal College in Sibiu, with teaching in German, which consists of 18 hours, representing a full chair.

The spokesperson of the Sibiu County School Inspectorate, Constantin Dincă, clarified for Ora de Sibiu that the Romanian president submitted his request for retirement for the position of physics teacher, citing the age limit.

Thus, the vacant position is that of Klaus Iohannis. This position is included in the list of vacancies for employment for a fixed period of 4 years and can be filled by a candidate with a permanent position, who must obtain a grade or average of at least 7 in the Entitlement examination.

The spokesperson of the Sibiu County School Inspectorate also explained to Agerpres that the position of Physics teacher in German at the “Samuel von Brukenthal” National College was put up for competition, and the competition will take place in July. Until then, Klaus Iohannis’ classes are taught by a teacher “seconded in the interest of education”.

Klaus Iohannis will reach retirement age, 65, on June 13.

Reserved chair since 2000

The “Samuel von Brukenthal” National College reported in 2019, in a response to the romaniacurata.ro website, that one of the physics chairs is “reserved”, starting in 2000, by Klaus Iohannis.

He invoked two articles from the Education Law no. 1/2011, according to which tenured teaching staff who hold other public positions have the right to reserve the teaching position during the period in which they perform these positions. There is no time limit for reserving a chair, and that period is considered seniority.

Klaus Iohannis won his first mandate as mayor of Sibiu in 2000, a position in which he was re-elected in 2004, 2008 and 2012, with overwhelming electoral scores. In 2014, Iohannis won his first term as president and was then re-elected in 2019.

According to his biography on the website of the Presidential Administration, Klaus Iohannis attended the German school in Sibiu, the “Samuel von Brukenthal” High School, and in 1978 he was admitted to the Faculty of Physics of the “Babeș Bolyai” University in Cluj-Napoca. In 1983, he started teaching at several schools around Sibiu, and five years later he was teaching physics at the high school he had graduated from – “Samuel von Brukenthal” National College.
