“From the information we have, his request to be released on bail was rejected, a decision that can be appealed,” the Minister of Justice said.

Gorghiu added that the ministry “will make efforts for Prince Paul to serve his sentence in Romania, as it does with any fugitive of the Romanian state” and that “we will provide all the necessary documents and information for the court in Malta to accept the extradition of the fugitive “.

Prince Paul of Romania, sentenced in December 2020 to 3 years and 4 months in prison in the case of the illegal retrocession of the Royal Farm in Băneasa and fled to France, was caught in Malta, judicial sources told Libertatea on Sunday, April 28.

“He was found in a resort in Malta, he is to be presented to the prosecutor for detention and then they will start the formalities to hand him over to us. The procedure can take up to 6 months”, said the cited sources.

Prince Paul was with his wife, Lia, when he was spotted by the Police.

Paul from Romania had been on the run for almost 4 years in France. In November 2023, he asked a Paris court not to extradite him to Romania, a request accepted by the French court, which thus refused his extradition.

Last fall, the Paris Court of Appeal invoked the illegal composition of the court panel from Romania. More precisely, the fact that one of the judges did not take the oath at the inauguration, judicial sources explained to Libertatea at the time.
