The secretary of state in the MAI, general police chief Bogdan Despescu, said on Monday that Romania can be considered a safe country, a fact that would be recognized by the citizens of other countries who visit us, reports Agerpres.

“Crime is approximately at the same level as at the beginning of 2023. Serious crimes, committed with violence, decreased by 2.4%, the number of theft crimes decreased by 7.9% and those of robbery by almost 18%. There is a slight increase in the number of crimes of hitting or other violence”, said Bogdan Despescu, referring to the number of crimes committed in the first months of the year.
“We can say that Romania is a safe country, a fact recognized not only by the citizens of Romania, but also by the citizens of other countries who visit us. (…) This safety is not a given, it is an effort of the structures with attributions in the field, which permanently, day by day, persistently carry out activities for the benefit of the citizens”, declared Bogdan Despescu.
According to the Secretary of State, since the entry into force of the Anastasia law, on July 13, 2023, 40 fatal accidents caused by driving under the influence of alcohol and five fatal accidents caused by driving under the influence of drugs have been registered at the national level.
The law stipulates that the perpetrators of fatal road accidents can no longer receive suspended sentences if, at the time of the accident, they were under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
He showed that, from the beginning of the year until now, more than 400 “large-scale” actions have been carried out for the administration of the evidence necessary to document the criminal activity in the instrumented files, with almost 3,000 home searches being carried out during these operations.
