An alarming incident took place in the town of Urlați in Prahova County, where a 51-year-old man was admitted to the Ploiesti Emergency County Hospital with the diagnosis of botulism. It seems that the patient suffered from the consumption of canned fish, and the necessary treatment had to be brought from the Republic of Moldova, because it was not found in Romania.

Canned fish infected with botulism

According to the statements of the medical director of the Ploiești County Hospital, Andrei Ilinca, the man ate two canned fish on April 9, and the first symptoms of the disease appeared the next day. Initially, he presented himself at Urlați City Hospital, where he was given treatment for digestive symptoms. However, during treatment, severe neurological symptoms also appeared, such as difficulty in swallowing and weakness in lifting the eyelids, which is why he was transferred to the Ploiești County Hospital.

The treatment brought from Chisinau

At the County Hospital, doctors confirmed the diagnosis of botulism and urgently requested botulinum antitoxin. Unfortunately, this vital substance was not available in Romania, which led to a critical situation for the patient. To save the man’s life, the hospital had to call on the support of the Hospital for Infectious Diseases in Chisinau, Republic of Moldova. Through coordinated efforts, two doses of antitoxin were delivered and the patient has already received the first dose, resulting in an improvement in his health.

However, the situation is not completely resolved, as the administration of the second dose of antitoxin is necessary to ensure the patient’s full recovery. Fortunately, following some quick steps, the second dose of botulinum antitoxin from the hospital in Chisinau is scheduled to be brought on Tuesday.
