Unconsciousness and lack of education on the part of some people from Bistri who blatantly manifested their stupidity – scrawling with graffiti one of the few fragments of history in the city.

I was wounded with illusions / No one will admit” – is the message scrawled on the more than 500-year-old wall.

In 1465, the people of Bistriţi bought from the king of Hungary Matia Corvin the fortress that had been owned by Ioan de Hunedoara in the city. They received permission to tear it down, explained historian Otto Dahinten. With one condition: that of reusing the construction material for the construction of a wall surrounding the city.

The wall would have had a thickness of approximately 1.90 m and a height of 9.5 m. In the upper part it was provided with a circulation corridor, supported on stones in the form of a console and covered with tiles. In 1484, the inner ring wall and gate towers were half raised. The works were completed by 1532.

The Bistrita Local Police self-reported the vandalism of the historical monument and began investigations into this case.

There have been acts of vandalism and terror in Bistrita, but not very serious. In order to be sanctioned, their authors should be identified, which is difficult, in the context where most of them spend the night – explained sources from the Bistrita Local Police.

According to Art. 14 of Law 61/1991, it is a contravention to write or draw, without the right, on the walls of buildings, on fences or on objects of common use in public places and to damage them by any means – if the acts are not committed in such of conditions that, according to the criminal law, are considered crimes.

In 2022, MPs voted a law to deter vandals. This provided for fines between 3,000 and 6,000 lei for the destruction of a historical monument.

In other European countries, the penalties for such vandalism are much harsher. The Italian government has imposed fines of up to 60,000 euros for those who destroy heritage. And that’s because more than 40,000 euros were spent to clean the facade of the Madama palace in Turin, vandalized by young graffiti enthusiasts, ObservatorNews states.

Removing graffiti from historical monuments is, on the other hand, a difficult process that requires a lot of attention, experts point out.

The cleaning process becomes much more complicated in the case of old monuments. It is not recommended to clean the monument by well-intentioned but unspecialized people who could destroy the monument.
