Emanuele Nicola Affaticati, 15 years old and resident of Fiorenzuola DArda, Piacenza Province of Emilia-Romagna, was recently nominated to be awarded the title of “Alfiere della Repubblica” (Standard Bearer of the Republic) by the President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, for an act of exceptional courage.

In December 2022, while returning from school by train, Emanuele overheard a conversation in Romanian between a passenger and his ex-partner. The man, a 30-year-old Romanian citizen who lived in Misano Adriatico and had a criminal record, told the woman on the phone that he would travel to Modena to kill her.

Understanding the seriousness of the situation, Emanuele immediately called 112 and alerted the police.

The Modena Railway Police intervened promptly, stopping the man when the train arrived and discovering a kitchen knife and other tools on him, which is why he was arrested on charges of attempted murder.

Emanuele’s mother, Ramona Lascu, spoke of the family’s pride and emotion, recalling how she initially thought it was a joke when she learned of the award. “We have been overwhelmed, since Friday, by this news. Emanuele will not give interviews: he is a minor and is behind an unusual story. We are very happy: at first we thought it was a joke, a prank, then we talked to the Secretariat of the Presidency: the recognition will be handed out on May 13 and for us, for my son, it is a great honor that we received with pride”, are the words of Ramona Rosemari Lascu, Emanuele’s mother, quoted by ANSA.

The recognition from the President of the Republic for my son is a great honor. Now, I told him that he has to live his life without getting into his head”, Ramona also specified.
