Russia on Sunday claimed the capture of a new village on the eastern front, Novobahmutivka, in a sector where the Russian army has advanced rapidly in the past week against the Ukrainian army, which is on the defensive, reports AFP.

“Thanks to active operations, the units of the central group of forces liberated the village of Novobahmutivka”, located northwest of the city of Avdiivka, captured by Moscow in February, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced in its daily report.

This village is located near the village of Oceretîne, which was captured this week by Russian forces, who now control most of the village, a conquest that has provoked a wave of criticism among Ukrainian military bloggers.

The Telegram channel DeepState, close to the Ukrainian army, followed by more than 700,000 subscribers, accuses the command of a unit deployed on the spot, the 115th Motorized Brigade, of “overrunning the defense in the entire region, causing considerable losses”.

Ukrainian forces face a Russian push on the front after the fall of Avdiivka.

Moscow’s forces are gaining ground against an opponent short of men and ammunition.

The commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian forces, Oleksandr Sîrski, admitted in mid-April that the situation on the eastern front had “deteriorated considerably”.

He states that he observes a “significant intensification” of the Russian offensive since March, which leads to “tactical successes”.

In this context, the head of the Ukrainian military intelligence Kirilo Budanov predicted on Monday that the situation will worsen in mid-May-beginning of June, which will constitute a “difficult period” for Ukraine.
