PNL Vice President Virgil Guran defends on RFI the liberal Iulian Dumitrescu, investigated for corruption, who is again running for CJ Prahova: “When the justice definitively condemns him, we remove him from there. Otherwise, we still come up with morality and we still connect with people (…). I’ve met many people who said: I don’t go into politics, I immediately realize that 20 years ago I took another wife 10 centimeters taller or that I drank an extra glass of wine at a party “.

Virgil Guran says that Iulian Dumitrescu has the right to run: “Indeed, they submitted their candidacy, without being validated by the National Political Bureau. Indeed, in the Statute, for the presidents of the County Councils, there is no such provision, that the Statute was made during the time when the presidents of the CJ were elected from among the councilors, so it was not this law and it was not updated. The general secretary, Lucian Bode, appealed to our Ethics and Statute Commission, to express whether he has the right or not to run for Iulian Dumitrescu, because he was not validated by the National Bureau. I can at least tell you, knowing the Statute, if we take it literally, the interpretation is that he has the right to run, with the support of colleagues from the branch, without the need for the approval of the central management”.

Image problems for PNL?

To the RFI producer’s remark that this is not about what the Statute says, but rather an ethical problem, as the image of the PNL is at stake, Virgil Guran replied: “The formation’s image is not at stake, because there we will win (.. .). We have so many examples from the past, I know, Scripcaru in Brașov, Gutău in Râmnicu Vâlcea, Rușanu, Ludovic Orban and so on, whom we did not let to run, the people were innocent, more recently also Vasile Blaga, the people were innocent, but their career went, they didn’t get where they were supposed to get, they were good politicians and mayors. So I say, I’ve always had this plea and I’ll stand by it until I die, that I’m a liberal, we’ve got to let justice do its job. When the justice said that he is definitively condemned, we take him out of there, but otherwise, we still come with morality and we still connect with people, with any problem and often we don’t choose the right thing or very, very many people I have met, great quality, who said: I don’t go into politics, I immediately realize that 20 years ago I broke up, I took another wife 10 centimeters taller and pretend that I’m immoral or someone you know what, I had an extra glass of wine at a party and I take that one out and I’m drooling and doing all sorts of things.”

To the filmmaker’s remark that this is not about an extra glass of wine, but about a weighty case and a serious accusation, the vice-president of the PNL replied: “Correct, but here in Romania, that’s how it’s done. If it turns out in two or three months that they were actually unfounded? That you saw that blunders were also made in justice, we must recognize this truth”.

Asked what the PNL will do, if it is proven that Iulian Dumitrescu is guilty, Virgil Guran replied: “If it is proven that he is guilty, he will have to be removed from that position and that’s it, health, he’s gone”.
