Cluj County Council associates with the municipality of Cluj-Napoca and seven other neighboring municipalities for the realization of the metropolitan train and allocates 10 million euros for the investment objective.

The President of the Cluj County Council, Alin Tișe, initiated a draft decision aimed at the association of the county administrative forum with the municipality of Cluj-Napoca and the communes of Florești, Gilău, Apahida, Baciu, Jucu, Bonțida and Gârbău, in order to achieve the investment objective: “Train Metropolitan Gilău – Floreşti – Cluj-Napoca – Baciu – Apahida – Jucu – Bonţida”. It will be subject to the approval of the plenary session of the County Council in the ordinary meeting of April 29, 2024.

“It is a project of strategic importance not only for the metropolitan area of ​​Cluj but for the entire county, a priority project that we support with all conviction. We will thus contribute, starting from next year, with around 10 million euros, for the materialization of this investment whose aim is to streamline car traffic, greater mobility of Cluj residents commuting between Cluj-Napoca and neighboring towns, but also reducing substantial amount of time spent in traffic”, said Alin Tișe, the president of the County Council.

CJ Cluj will build park&rides near the train stations

Based on the association agreement, the County Council will cover the ineligible expenses caused by the construction of “Park&Ride” car parks, which will be located near the railway stations in the towns of Bonțida, Răscruci, Jucu, Câmpenești, Apahida, Dezmir, Baciu, Suceag, Rădaia , Mera, Nădășel and Gârbău.

The financing of these investments is to be made both from the County Council’s own budget, through multi-annual allocations, and from other sources, including European funds.

I can start my studies, after the approval of the association

Following the conclusion of the association agreement, the pre-feasibility, feasibility, environmental impact and strategic assessment studies will be able to be started, in the shortest possible time, so that the investment can be financed from European funds, through the Transport 2021 Program -2027, Priority (P6) – Development of sustainable mobility in urban nodes – metropolitan trains.

The future metropolitan train will use the existing public railway infrastructure, on the route Bonţida – Cluj-Napoca – Gârbău, with a length of 48.8 km. According to the documentation developed so far, the railway fleet will include about nine trains, with a capacity of 420 seats. They will operate exclusively electrically, at a maximum speed of 150 km/h and with a frequency of 30 minutes. It is also estimated that the total number of passengers transported will be approximately 7,600 persons/day in 2030, respectively approximately 9,500 persons/day in 2050.
