Experts from Romania’s National Cyber Security Directorate (DNSC) have issued a warning about a new fraud method targeting citizens via the phone.
Warning for Romanians! A new method of telephone fraud
This fraud tactic involves the use of a technique known as “spoofing”, where attackers manipulate the display of the phone number to make the call appear to be from an official establishment, according to Playtech.
In these calls, criminals pose as employees of DNSC and use false names to gain the trust of victims. They claim that they aim to assist victims in recovering lost sums of money and request personal information such as full name, IBAN code and the last six digits of the CNP.

DNSC explained that it will never make calls to users to promise recovery of lost funds, nor will it ask for sensitive personal information over the phone. The institution stressed the importance of verifying the authenticity of any call received from an authority or institution, especially when personal data is requested.

How to prevent such fraud
To avoid falling into these traps, DNSC recommends:
- Call authentication through a distinct communication channel.
- Reporting suspicious calls to impersonated institutions.
- Notifying the bank immediately if card details have been provided.
- Filing a complaint with the Police and notifying the DNSC in case of confirmed fraud.
- Sharing information about these fraud attempts to raise awareness.
