The complaints of the people of Bucharest regarding the removal of trees come in the context where the Capital is deficient in green spaces, so any disappearance of some trees leads to the thought of unjustified cutting.

ALPAB – the Bucharest Lakes, Parks and Leisure Administration – transplanted nine trees from Ghencea Boulevard in Bucharest to carry out the street widening works. While some residents of the area understood the necessity of this measure, others are of the opinion that the boulevard now looks worse without the trees and that they should be replaced.

“Up to now, in King Mihai I Park (Herăstrău Nou), Sera Ghencea and SIEUMT Ghencea, nine specimens of trees have been transplanted, based on the Protocol concluded between ALPAB and the Bucharest Metropolitan Buildings Trust. (…) The respective trees were transplanted due to the fact that they prevent the execution of the work “Penetration, Extension of Ghencea – Domneşti and over-widening of bd. Ghencea between Braşov street and tram terminal 41». (…) The relocation was carried out during the optimal period for this type of work, an aspect that will not endanger the health of the trees. We mention that such transplant works are not frequent, they are punctual and carried out in most cases where this is absolutely necessary, such as this one. Thus, according to good practices, maintenance works will be applied to the transplanted trees that favor a high percentage of dendrological material retention”, the representatives of ALPAB sent to ZF’s request, in a reply signed by the general director Corina Simona Bega.

The Mayor of the Capital, Nicuşor Dan, also said, in a video posted on his Facebook page, that the transplanting of trees was the measure taken to relocate the utilities in order to restore the Ghencea boulevard.

Bucharest needs a register of green spaces, this being one of the big problems of the city, from which starts the difficulty in changing the face of the Capital from the point of view of the surfaces of green space, which are constantly decreasing. According to the information available on the PMB website, at the moment the most recent such register dates from the end of 2013.

According to the data of the Bucharest Lakes Parks and Recreation Administration (ALPAB), if in 1989 Bucharest had an area of 16.79 square meters of green space per inhabitant, in 2006 the average reached 9.67 square meters. However, European statistics indicate a more recent average of 7.1 square meters of green space for each Bucharest resident. For comparison, according to Greenpeace data, in 2012 Vienna had an area of 120 square meters of green space per inhabitant, followed by Helsinki (100 sq m) and Stockholm (86 sq m).

Capital cities larger than Bucharest also had more green space, among them London, with 27 square meters per inhabitant, Berlin – with 38 square meters, and Rome – with 45 square meters.
