Austria could be forced to accept Romania in Schengen

--

Austria could be forced to fully accept Romania’s entry into Schengen, says MEP Eugen Tomac. This could be possible following the decision of the European Parliament, which voted for the inter-institutional agreement on the revision of the Schengen Borders Code, “a decisive step towards strengthening the borders”, according to the PMP MEP.

What the European Parliament decided

“We have just voted in the European Parliament the inter-institutional agreement on the revision of the Schengen Borders Code, a decisive step towards strengthening our borders. The proposed changes firmly respond to the problem of illegal migration, security threats and health crises and aim to strengthen the functioning of the Space, both at external and internal borders”, wrote Eugen Tomac on Facebook.

Why will Austria no longer be able to be against Romania’s entry into Schengen

The MEP states that actions are being taken to clarify and possibly reduce the situations in which member states can reintroduce internal border controls and that, according to the judgments of the Court of Justice of the European Union, they can be imposed due to serious threats, but they must be very good justified and limited in time.

“With improved legislation, what excuse does Austria have to use its right of veto against Romania’s accession to the Schengen Area? What other reasons can he cite for the illegal controls he still carries out at the air borders, even though Romania is part of the Air Space? I will continue to fight for Romania to acquire its rightful place in the Schengen Area! We notified the European Commission, the Council and the Parliament about Austria’s abuses, and today’s vote only strengthens our position in the process we opened at the CJEU”, concluded Eugen Tomac.

Romania in Air Schengen

Romania is in the Schengen Area, starting from Sunday, March 31, with air and sea borders. After 17 years since joining the European Union, Romanians can travel freely but only through Air Schengen.

Those traveling outside the border, in the area of free movement, no longer have to present their identity documents at the border control. The measure applies at airports and ports. .
