Satu Mare City Hall is moving to the Old Center! The procedure has started, the building is undergoing rehabilitation

Mayor Kereskenyi Gabor intends to move the Satu Mare City Hall to the former Hotel Victoria, located in the Old Center of Satu Mare, opposite the Northern Theatre. In the former ghetto where prostitutes and drug addicts lived their lives. After the eviction of the legal or illegal tenants, at the proposal of the mayor Kereskenyi Gabor, the Local Council is invited to approve the draft decision regarding “the approval of some measures related to the start of procedures in order to declare the public utility of the building located in Satu Mare, str. Horea no. 6”.

“Considering the fact that at the moment the City Hall of the Municipality of Satu Mare does not have a headquarters for carrying out the activity, the building where the activity is currently carried out being the property of the County of Satu Mare, it is intended to carry out the expropriation of the building located in Satu Mare, Horea str. no. 6”, states Kereskenyi Gabor in the document brought to the attention of local councilors.

If the project will receive the green light, commissions will be set up to carry out preliminary research in order to declare public utility for works of national or local interest, the appointment by the Satu Mare County Council of a commission to carry out preliminary research in this regard.

We remind you that in February of this year, the design and execution contract was signed for the rehabilitation of the facades and roof of the building located on Horea street no. 6. The investment is worth 13.66 million lei, the execution term being 30 months. The works will be executed by the association SC EURAS SRL – SC K&K STUDIO DE PROIECTARE SRL

The building is on the list of historical monuments of the municipality of Satu Mare. The former Victoria Hotel had 60 rooms and was inaugurated on December 16, 1910. On the ground floor, an opulent restaurant and cafe were set up, where several balls and events were organized. Over the years, the building has had several owners and tenants, its purpose changing with them, functioning as a hospital during the First World War. After the Second World War it functioned as a report building, with certain rooms being repartitioned to create more social housing.

Considered to be one of the most modern hotels in the municipality of Satu Mare, Hotel Victoria, located on the current Horea Street, became one of the most infamous places in the city.

The hotel was inaugurated in December 1910, being built according to the plans of the architect Heinrich Viktor. Even before the First World War, the hotel became the property of the Commercial Bank, and then it was bought by Schwartz Izrael, a businessman from the Maramureș area. After the Second World War, tenants lived in the building, and later, some apartments were occupied by all kinds of dubious people. Currently, the location is known as Horea 6 and was one of the most notorious places in the city.
