Essential rules of behavior in the event of an earthquake. What NOT to do to avoid a tragedy

No matter how much preparation we have, an earthquake will always take us by surprise and panic most of us. How to act in case of an earthquake?

1. Keep calm, DON’T PANIC, keep others calm too, protect children, old people and women. Don’t be scared by the noises around you.

2. Prevent tendencies to leave the room or home, because the initial seismic phase has a short duration, so that it is the strong phase of the seismic movement that can surprise you on stairs, hallways, landings, in crowding and panic, leading to serious, unwanted accidents .

3. Attention! Stairs are construction elements very sensitive to the differential movements of the floors and, even if they would withstand, the movement of people on the stairs, under the effect of seismic oscillation, is extremely dangerous. Even if exiting from the lower floors or from a ground-floor dwelling would in principle be possible and feasible in a short time, especially for young people, there are many other risks outside: chimneys and chimneys, parapets, ornaments, glazing, etc.

4. Stay in the room or home, away from windows that may break and injure you, protect yourself under a beam, solid door frame, under a desk or table that is strong enough to protect you from falling objects overlapping furniture, lamps, decorative plasters, etc. In the absence of such possibilities, you can protect yourself by sitting on the floor next to a solid wall, on your knees and elbows, face down, and with your palms together you will protect your head, the back of your head, and with your forearms on the sides, your head. This recommendation implies a prior knowledge of those resistant construction elements, by consulting a certified specialist.

5. If possible, close the sources of fire as quickly as you can, and if something caught fire, intervene immediately after the strong shock has passed.

6. Do not run out the door, do not jump out of the window, do not run up the stairs, do not use the elevator, avoid crowding, crowding, and if possible open the door of the house to the outside, to prevent it from being locked for evacuation after the seismic movement is over.

7. Don’t run in the street.

8. if you are outside a building, move as far away from the building as possible, avoid plasters, bricks, chimneys, parapets, cornices, windows, ornaments that can usually fall into the street. Do not run into the street, move calmly to an open and safe place.

9. Give first aid to injured persons.

10. If you are surprised by falling plaster or overturned furniture, seek to protect your head and limbs or ensure your survival; later you will seek to alarm, by different methods, the neighbors as well as the rescue-intervention teams of your presence.
