The Saharan dust also reached Iasi, but clean air was breathed. The phenomenon that took place last night – Ziarul de Iasi

The second wave of dust brought in the last month by air currents from the Sahara over Romania is more visible than the first, at least in Iasi. The reason: the rain last night, which brought much of it to the ground and cleared the air.

“Fortunately, this time there was also precipitation, and this dust was deposited in a wet form on the ground, and in this way the particles in suspension PM10 and PM2.5 that we should have breathed did not appear, so I breathed fresh air. But it really creates a visual discomfort, if you will, its deposition on all surfaces, including cars and vegetation”, explained the phenomenon Galea Temneanu, director of the Iași Environmental Protection Agency.

“It’s a phenomenon that we encounter quite often lately, but depending on the weather conditions it may or may not influence the quality of the air we breathe. This time, the rain was really beneficial and deposited it on the ground,” she said.

Romania is under a new air mass loaded with dust of Saharan origin, less than a week after another similar episode. Thus, according to the National Meteorological Administration, starting today, from 09:00 a.m. until tomorrow, April 24, at 1:00 p.m., the air circulation, predominantly south-westerly, will favor the advance from the north of Africa of this new air mass loaded with particles of dust of Saharan origin, towards the south-east of Europe. It will be over Romania today and tomorrow, and dust deposits can be observed in the areas and intervals in which it will rain.

On Wednesday afternoon, the air mass laden with Saharan dust particles will move northeast and away from the country, according to meteorologists. The way this air mass moves over Europe can be followed on the website of the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS): https://atmosphere.copernicus.eu/charts/
