A new ecological project started last week at the Friedrich Schiller German High School. With funding from the Partnership Foundation, the Oradea association Ecotop will set up, together with students and teachers, an urban garden in the school yard, revealing permaculture techniques to them.

Inspired by nature, permaculture involves growing vegetables and fruits through self-sustaining systems with as little human intervention as possible. “At the first activity, together with the students, we planted fruit trees in the school yard, and in the following days we will build the crates for the vegetable garden,” explained Eleonora Mircescu, Ecotop Oradea member.

The students will learn to grow vegetables without chemicals, which they will water with specially collected rainwater and they will also fertilize them with vegetable fertilizers. They will also learn how the layers should be made, for the best possible production, and which insects are good for the plants.

“I chose this school because it is the only one in Oradea that still has a dirt yard. In addition, it is surrounded by blocks of flats, and if they wish, the neighbors can also participate in the lessons”, said Mircescu.

Ecotop carried out similar activities at a school in Săcueni, where the students continue to plant vegetables even after the completion of the project.
