Between April 5-7, 2024, the Xth edition of the National Martyrology Symposium will take place, under the theme “Memory and resistance. Hypotheses of political repression in contemporary Romania”.

The event is organized by the Archdiocese of Alba Iulia, the National Union Museum and the Faculty of Orthodox Theology in Alba Iulia, in partnership with the “Holy Cross” Monastery from Aiud.

And this year, the National Martyrology Symposium brings together, in an academic and memorial communion alike, historians, theologians, philologists and established researchers.

The event will begin on Friday, April 5, at 9:00 a.m., at the Faculty of Orthodox Theology in Alba Iulia, with the celebration of the Te-Deum service.

Then, in the “Sfântul Simion Ștefan” Hall, the official opening of the event will take place. Next, the first part of the scientific communication sessions will take place.

Later, from 1:00 p.m., at Sala Unirii in Alba Iulia (North Wing), the exhibition “Prison Universes: the poetry of communist prisons” will take place.

Then, in the time interval 15.00-19.40, the last part of the scientific communication sessions will be organized.

18 researchers closely concerned with studying the phenomenon of martyrdom in communist prisons and cultivating the memory of the victims of the communist regime will present papers.

The academic and spiritual manifestation will continue on Saturday, April 6, at the “Holy Cross” Monastery in Aiud.

Starting at 13.00, the monastic settlement will host a meeting of the soul with Nina Moica, witness of the communist prison universe, who will hold the conference entitled “Voice of Memory”, in the presence of students from the “Poetry – testimony from the communist prison” project.

The National Martyrology Symposium will end on Sunday, April 7, at the “Holy Cross” Monastery in Aiud, on the occasion of the celebration of the Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great by His Holiness Father Archbishop Irineu.
