The organization hopes to send a mission to the medical facility, Gaza’s largest, on Tuesday “to see what we can do, to help, as much as we can,” Margaret Harris said.

A ceasefire in the enclave “should have happened months ago, but it has to happen now,” the WHO spokeswoman added.

His remarks come after a spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Daniel Hagari, said on Monday that they had distinguished between patients, doctors and civilians housed in the medical complex and militants, adding that they had done their best to avoid harming civilians, and the 14-day siege was an “anti-terrorist” mission.

At least 300 bodies have been discovered in the hospital so far, according to the Gaza Civil Defense, but the exact death toll is difficult to determine.

A witness quoted by CNN says Israeli troops buried bodies in and around the compound and destroyed nearby roads.

The Hamas-run Palestinian Ministry of Health announced on Monday, April 1, that the Israeli army had withdrawn its tanks from Al-Shifa hospital, and dozens of bodies were later discovered there.

The IDF confirmed the withdrawal, stating that they “completed a precise operational activity in the Shifa hospital area and left the area.”

Israel launched a “precision operation” against the medical facility on March 18, claiming it had information that Hamas was using the hospital as a base to launch attacks.

Israel has vowed to annihilate Hamas in response to the group’s attacks on its territory on October 7, in which at least 1,160 people were killed and about 250 were taken hostage, according to Israeli data.

Since then, more than 32,000 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip, according to the enclave’s Hamas-run Health Ministry.
