Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said on Wednesday, in relation to the controversial “sickness tax”, that he does not understand why it is a surcharge and that it will be the Parliament that will make a decision in this regard.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu expressed confusion about the concept of “sickness tax”. He stated that he did not understand the reasons for the surcharge and that Parliament would take a decision on this.

Marcel Ciolacu added that both he and everyone else already pay 10% contribution to CASS.

He emphasized that as prime minister, he cannot initiate such a change. The Prime Minister said that it is about a normative act in the Parliament.

Marcel Ciolacu claims that the CCR decision is violated

The Head of the Executive emphasized that “he does not understand what overtaxation is”. He mentioned that the 10% is what we all pay at CASS.

“I would violate a decision of the CCR. I am firmly convinced, my colleagues at the Parliament will make a decision. On the other hand, I don’t understand what over-taxation is. I and everyone else pay 10% at CASS. Medical leave is income. For those with chronic diseases, for those with cancer, for young mothers, I totally agree with getting rid of it. I will talk to Mr. Simonis and we will do it very quickly. I hope this week”, said Marcel Ciolacu.

What is this sick tax?

This sick tax is the 10% contribution from sick leave. This tax caused a wave of reactions in society. The governing coalition has assumed, since January, that it will intervene to amend the law in this regard. While the government is making this promise, the opposition is criticizing the way this issue is being handled.

In this context, several deputies from the USR side ask the PSD and PNL MPs not to postpone the final vote in the Chamber of Deputies for today. They also demanded that the tax be cancelled, at least for certain categories of people affected by this controversial measure.

USR claims that Boloș is putting his hand in Romanians’ pockets through the “sickness tax”

Oana Țoiu, USR deputy, said she would send an official letter to Boloș. Formal questions will be asked in the document, so that he will be forced to admit, through his own signature, that he told Romanians lies. She argued that various categories of people are affected by the sick tax. According to Țoiu, these categories include cancer patients, parents of children with cancer, mothers who have given birth and who are employed. The list also includes women who have high-risk pregnancies and need a few days of rest.
